Shining Stars is a collection of 24 collectible plush characters. Each character comes with a secret code, which is found inside a sealed tag. The code allows kids to name and register a star with the International Star Registry. Upon selecting a constellation and naming a star, the website will show a (small) printable map and coordinates for the star.
Young players can then explore “My Star Space” which offers a variety of e-cards, simple mini-games, cartoons and music. Playing games earns “Glow Points” which can be spent on creating and accessorizing a unique virtual area known as “My Star Worlds”. Or even better, Glow Points can be donated by clicking the “Star Share” Button, followed by selecting “Donate your Glow Points”. Depending on the combined total of points donated, the Russ Berrie U.S. Gift, Inc will make a minimum guaranteed donation of $50,000 and a maximum donation of $850,000 over a two-year period to the Starlight Starbright Foundation.
Being a “Star” themed website, Shining Stars had a great opportunity to educate kids about stars thru mini games or at least by providing some fun facts about stars. Unfortunately, the site does not make use of the opportunity including its affiliation with the Star Registry whatsoever.
Overall, Shining Stars are cute and adorable plush toys, which come with access to a website that may not make your kids smarter, but if properly explained by their parents should make them become aware and feel good about donating glow points to children in need.
