The AbleGamers Foundation, Inc. an organization devoted to improving accessibility options for the disabled is now a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization.  Individuals and associations who donate to the AbleGamers Foundation, Inc. and AbleGamers.com website and projects may now be eligible to deduct their contributions on their federal taxes.

“I think this is a great next step for our growing mission to make sure that as many people as possible can participate in the rich worlds that are being created in the digital entertainment space” says Mark Barlet, President of the AbleGamers Foundation. AbleGamers can now give away donated technological devices to disabled individuals on a regular basis.  As a leader in the fight to bring further accessibility to the $59 billion video gaming industry, AbleGamers continues to assist developers with the implementation of accessibility options in their software.  The new nonprofit status may allow contributors to realize a tax deduction from the IRS for their support of disabled gamers, but you should consult your accountant or tax advisor.

In a recent survey commissioned by Popcap, over 20% of individuals responding to the questionnaire classified themselves as disabled.  According to American Medical News, more than 40 million Americans or one in seven people are disabled.  That number is expected to rise by up to 30% over the coming years.  Technology today allows more individuals to continue with everyday life after catastrophic accidents, debilitating diseases, and wartime injuries than ever before.  Studies show that video games provide a much-needed distraction from painful rehabilitation for many disabled veterans.  In addition, online video games have proven to improve (more…)

Cartoon Network New Media announced today the launch of a new content update to their AAA, browser-based massively multiplayer online game (MMOG), Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall.

Speaking at the Develop conference in the U.K., director of PlayStation Home Pete Edwards said that the users of Sony’s virtual world are overwhelmingly young and male.

“Only 80 percent of users fall into the 18- to 35-year-old male demographic,” he said, noting that said demographic typically makes up 90 percent of the console audience. According to Gamasutra, Edwards said that since Home’s open beta launched in December, between 25 and 35 percent of online PlayStation 3 users have used the service “at least once.”

Edwards declined to quantify the number of active users, claiming that the figure is difficult to measure, but said that Home is “slowly broadening the appeal of the console demographic.”

However, Edwards didn’t say who makes up the other 20 percent of Home users. Are they males below the age of 18 or above 35? Or are there actually more females using the Second Life-like virtual environment?

(Chris says: Not to mention that it’s a suspiciously odd comparison. It might compare favorably to the typical console demographic, but what about comparing it to, I don’t know… the exact install base of PlayStation 3?)

Of course, it’s hard to say who’s who since the service is avatar-based, but the last time I used Home for an extended period of time, my female avatar endured a bout of sexual harassment from male ones, and it seemed like there were a lot more male gamers than females.

A more recent dip into Home had fewer people saying lewd things to my (more…)
