The story focuses on the final battles of World War II in the Pacific and Eastern Europe involving the United States, the Empire of Japan, the Soviet Union, and Nazi Germany. It is told from the perspectives of a Marine Raider and a Red Army soldier, and is based on several historical battles, including the Makin Island raid, the Battle of Peleliu, and the Battle of Berlin. The multiplayer portion of the game contains various game modes, and contains a leveling system that allows the player to unlock additional weapons and rewards as they progress, which was originally implemented in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. A new feature to the Call of Duty series is the co-op mode, which can support up to four players online and two offline.

Whattheyplay comments: “Though it is violent, it isn’t senseless violence”.

“Since the game is based on WWII, you won’t find the over the top violence found in the Grand Theft Auto or Saint’s Row series. Rather, it’s similar to what’s found in a war movie. Of course there’s a lot of death and chaos throughout the game, but it’s not exactly what you’d call “senseless.” In the context of the game, the soldiers provide the player with motivation to do what is necessary in order to complete their mission. Much like Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers, you’ll see some intense carnage and brutality. Though it’s not pleasant to watch, it always comes within the context of true war realities. For instance, in a non-playable cut-scene used to advance the story, a prisoner of war has his throat slit by his enemy.”

Gamingheaven advises: Parents be aware for young children as the game can be quite gory at times particularly with a shotgun up close to the head or torso and some of the explosions can dismember soldiers in particularly gruesome ways.

IGN applauded the developer Treyarch for its decision to stage World at War in the Pacific theater of World War II, but also noted that the scope of the campaign hurt the continuity of the game’s plot, with some missions taking place several years after others and disrupting the flow of the narrative. The addition of a co-op mode was also complimented as helping to increase the game’s replayability, and the multiplayer mode was described as “definitely an area where World at War shines.” IGN concluded that World at War was a “solid, confident shooter with plenty to offer the casual and hardcore alike.”

GameSpot reviewed CoD slightly more critical “World at War is a lot like its predecessor” Familiar setting - Familiar game mechanics - Familiar guns. “

Reviewer Chris Watters continues “The game boasts the same addictive multiplayer system as Modern Warfare, and even expands the multiplayer possibilities by allowing four players to play through the campaign cooperatively. World at War achieves greatness but falls short of excellence. This is only a bad thing if you are expecting this game to top its benchmark predecessor. If, however, you are hoping for an exciting campaign, fun cooperative play, and engaging multiplayer action, then you’ll find a lot to be happy about in World at War.

1UP writes “World at War may not represent the best of Call of Duty, but it’s far from the worst.”

Eurogamer concludes, “World at War certainly benefits from Modern Warfare’s beefier graphics engine, but when it comes to the crunch it lacks the crucial innovations - both in gameplay and concept - that made its immediate predecessor so deservedly popular.”
