Remember those super-cool space ships you doodled on graph paper in Middle School? Pen strokes furiously waging massive intergalactic battles in History class with the fate of humanity hanging in the balance?

Meet “SketchFighter 4000 Alpha

The gameplay can essentially be categorized as “old fashioned Shoot ‘Em Up” (a game where the player controls a vehicle and fights large numbers of enemies with shooting attacks). However, Sketch Fighter’s graphics resemble pencil drawings on a sheet of graph/math paper. Now that’s a cool idea!

The game is only available for Mac’s, with no Windows version available. You don’t see that every day. Normally it’s the other way around. Go Mac’s! Sketch Fighter is published by Ambrosia – the same people who made Snapz Pro X, without a doubt one of the most high quality screen capture (image and video) tools you’ll find for your Mac.

The full version of the game sets you back 20 bucks, but for that you get to design your own levels. Plus, you can upload your creation and share it with the community, download other player created levels and play in versus mode.

If you have a liking for “unique” game like me, you may also enjoy Crayon Physics Deluxe. Crayon Physics Delux is a 2D physics puzzle game, in which you get to experience what it would be like if your drawings would be magically transformed into real physical objects. Solve puzzles with your artistic vision and creative use of physics. Granted that you can only download the prototype – but hey, it’s free.

Crayon Physics

Crayon made it into the Independent Games Festival finals held during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Cola and I will be on–site for the whole week bringing you updates as they happen.

Right along the lines of creative and innovative games; Sony’s Little Big Planet has a release date: 09.02.08. Let’s hope this game really plays as well as it looks in all the promo videos.

My short list of unique games would not be complete without mentioning Ian Bogost’s Persuasive Games. Fat World is the latest in his collection of excellent games that make players laugh and think at the same time. Fatworld is a game about the politics of nutrition. It explores the relationships between obesity, nutrition, and socioeconomics in the contemporary U.S.
