What is the best handheld gaming device for kids and families? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Leapster, Nintendo DS, Sony and PSP? What accessories do I need? What is the target age group for each system?

There are many questions and options when it comes down to selecting the right handheld entertainment and gaming device for your kids.

We put all systems to the test, and here is what we think.

Watch our exclusive KidConfidence Handheld Buyers Guide to learn more about the Pros and Cons of each system.

Leapfrog Leapster
The LeapFrog “Leapster” Learning Game System and the newer LeapFrog “Leapster L-Max” Learning Game System are edutainment game handheld devices. We recommend the device for young kids ages 3-6. The ease of use and size make them an ideal companion when traveling. The Leapsters educational benefit is undenialble, however limitations in graphic and gameplay may have your kids outgrow the system or loose interest.

Nintendo DS
The Nintendo DS is a very kid friendly handheld gaming system. Nintendo is very committed to their handheld business and you can be sure there are many exciting new features and attachments on the way for this very pocket-friendly distant cousin to the Game Boy. The DS is also backwards compatible, and plays Gameboy Advance Games. A healthy offering of games for all ages and all interests make the DS a good choice for everyone.

Nintendo DS Lite Polar White

Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable
Though the PlayStation Portable is a little large for a pocket and UMDs (discs) can be a pain to carry around, there’s no better looking handheld in terms of graphics and screen quality. A healthy offering of great games and the ability to play video, music and photos make the PSP a great buy for teens. The PSP requires a Memory Stick in order to save games and store items. The Memory Stick is NOT included with purchase of the system and adds additional cost to the system.

Sony PSP Star Wars - Ceramic White
Sony 2 GB Memory Stick PRO Duo
